Parts of Root

We will discuss here about the different parts of root.

They are: (i) Root-cap and (ii) Root hair

Root-cap: Let us take a magnifying glass and observe the tips of the roots carefully. Now we will find a small cap-like structure is fitted at each root tip; this is called root-cap. Root-caps protect the root tips from being damaged due to friction with soil particles while they grow through it.

Root hair: Let us look minutely at the portion, little above the root-cap, we will find numerous very fine hair-like structures on it. These fine hair-like projections of root skin-cells are called root hairs, which absorb water and nutrient salts from soil. The portion between the root-cap and the region of root hair is known as the growing region because this portion grows fast to make the root longer.
