Rounding Large Numbers

In previous topics we have discussed about rounding to tens hundreds and thousands. This topic will discuss about rounding off large numbers which will include:

1. Rounding off to nearest ten thousands

2. Rounding off to nearest hundred thousands

3. Rounding off to nearest million

4. Rounding off to nearest ten million

1. Rounding off to Nearest Ten Thousands

If the digit in one thousands place is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 then the number should be rounded off to the previous nearest 10000.

If the digit in one thousands place is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then it should be rounded off to next nearest 10000

Example:

Round off to nearest ten thousands:

(i) 86279

(ii) 40153

Solution:

(i) 90000

The number in one thousand’s place is 6 hence it should be rounded off to next nearest 10000.

(ii) 40000

In 40153 the number in 1000 place is 0 hence it should be rounded off to previous 10000 and 40153 lie between 40000 and 50000 and the nearest being 40000

2. Rounding off to Nearest Hundred Thousands

Check the number in the ten thousands place if it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then it should be rounded off to next nearest 100000.

If the number in ten thousand place is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 then it should be rounded off to previous nearest 100000

Example:

Round off to nearest hundred thousand:

(i) 245102

(ii) 798362

Solution:

(i) 200000

In 245102 the number in ten thousand place is 4 which is less than 5 hence should be rounded off to previous 100000. As 245102 lie between 200000 and 300000 therefore, 245102 should be rounded off to 200000.

(ii) 800000

798362 should be rounded off to 800000 as 9 is in ten thousand place hence it should be rounded to next nearest 100000 that is 800000

3. Rounding off to Nearest Million

If the digit in hundred thousand place is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then it should be rounded to next nearest one million (1,000,000)

If the digit in hundred thousand place is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 the round it ti previous nearest one million (1,000,000)

Example:

Round off to nearest million:

(i) 7843322

(ii) 1257936

Solution:

(i) 8,000,000

7843322 should be rounded to 8,000,000 as the digit in hundred thousand place is more than 5 hence rounded to next nearest million i.e. 8,000,000.

(ii) 1,000,000

1257936 should be rounded to 1,000,000 as the digit in hundred thousand place is less than 2 hence should be rounded to previous nearest million 1,000,000.

4. Rounding off to Nearest Ten Million

Check the digit in one million place if it 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 then round to previous nearest ten million

If the digit in one million place is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then round to next nearest ten million

Example:

Round off to nearest ten million:

(i) 45234318

(ii) 63258920

Solution:

(i) 50,000,000

The digit in one million place is 5 hence rounded to next nearest ten million (i. e. 50,000,000)

(ii) 60,000,000

3 is in one million place and less than 5 hence rounded off to previous ten million. 62,258,920 lie between 60, 000,000 and 70,000,000 and the nearest being 60,000,000.
