Round off to Nearest 1000

This topic would deal with rounding off to nearest 1000. Like we did rounding off to tens and hundreds in a similar way we will do rounding off to thousands. This subtopic will content various examples which will help learners learn rounding off to thousands in a better way.

While rounding off to thousand we will consider the hundreds place digit. If the hundreds place digit is 1, 2, 3, or 4 then round it off to the previous nearest 1000. If the hundreds place digits are 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then round it off to the next nearest 1000. Like in rounding off to tens and hundreds 5 is the mid value here as well as is the mid value for checking whether to round it to previous nearest thousand or next nearest thousand.

Here are few examples illustrated to shoe rounding off to nearest 1000

1. Round off the following numbers to the nearest 1000

(i) 4576

(ii) 2763

(iii)7420

Solution:

(i) 5000

Explanation:

4576 is rounded off to 5000 as the digit in the hundred’s place is 5 hence we will round it off to the next nearest 1000. As we know if the hundreds digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then we round it off to next nearest 1000. 4576 lie between 4000 and 5000. Hence 4576 would be rounded off to 5000.

(ii) 3000

Explanation:

In 2763 the hundred’s place digit is 7 hence we round it off to next nearest 1000. Now 2763 lie between 2000 and 3000 and as we know that is the hundred digit number is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then we will round it off to next nearest 1000. Hence 2763 is rounded off to 3000.

(iii) 7000

Explanation:

7420 is rounded off to 7000 as the hundred’s place digit is 4 and we know that if the hundred digit is 1, 2, 3, 4 then the number should be rounded off to the previous nearest 1000. 7420 lie between 7000 and 8000 and in this case 7000 is the nearest 1000. Hence 7420 is rounded off to 7000.

2. Round off the following numbers to the nearest 1000

(i) 14586

(ii) 39875

Solution:

(i) 15000

14586 should be rounded off to 15000 as the hundred’s place digit is 5 hence rounded off to the next nearest thousand. As we know that if the hundred’s place digits are 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then it is rounded off to next nearest 1000. 14586 lies between 14000 and 15000 and hence the nearest 1000 is 15000.

(ii) 40000

8 is in the hundred’s place digit and we are aware of the fact that if the hundred’s place digits are 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then it is rounded off to next nearest thousand. 39875 means 30000 + 9000 + 800 + 70 + 5 and this 9875 lies between 9000 and 10000 and hence 9875 should be rounded off to 10000. As, 30000 + 10000 = 40000 hence 39875 should be rounded off to 40000.
