Divisible by 2

This topic would deal with the divisibility rule of 2 and few sums on divisibility rule of 2.

Numbers that are ending with 02, 4, 6, and 8 are divisible by 2. That means numbers ending with 0 or multiples of 2 are divisible by 2. We know that numbers which are multiples of 2 are even numbers. Hence we can say that all even numbers are divisible by 2.

Numbers ending with odd numbers like 13, 5, 7, and 9 are not divisible by 2.

Here are few examples on divisibility rule of 2.

1. Choose the numbers that are divisible by 2 and state why?

12        67        44        90        89        76        23        24

Solution:

12 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is an even number.

67 is not divisible by 2 as the last digit is an odd number.

44 is divisible by 2 as the digit in the unit’s place is 4

90 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is zero

89 is not divisible by 2 as the last digit is an odd number

76 is divisible by 2 as the digit at units place is an even

23 is not divisible by 2 as the number ends with an odd number

24 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is an even number

2. State why the following numbers are divisible by 2?

(i) 900

(ii) 884

(iii) 3466

(iv) 7542

(v) 8828

Solution:

(i) 900 ends with the digit 0 hence it is divisible by 2

(ii) 884 ends with an even number hence it is divisible by 2

(iii) 3466 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is a multiple of 2

(iv) 7542 is divisible by 2 as the digit at unit place is 2

(v) 8228 end with a multiple of 2 hence it is divisible by 2

3. Fill in the blanks to make the numbers divisible by 2

(i) 3 …. 8

(ii) 85 ….

(iii) 72 ….

(iv) …. 46

(v) 2 ….2

(vi) 9 …. 0

(vii) 24….

(viii) 10 ….

(ix) 40 ….

(x) 36 ….

Solution:

(i) 358

(ii) 852

(iii) 724

(iv) 746

(v) 212

(vi) 970

(vii) 244

(viii) 100

(ix) 404

(x) 366

4. State which of the numbers are divisible by 2 and state why?

(i) 45633

(ii) 4102

(iii) 7500

(iv) 3620

(v) 4513

(vi) 7458

(vii) 3221

Solution:

(i) 45633 is not divisible by 2 as the last digit is an odd number

(ii) 4102 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is an even number

(iii) 7500 is divisible by 2 as the digit in the unit’s place is 2

(iv) 3620 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is 0

(v) 4513 is not divisible by 2 as the last digit is an odd number

(vi) 7458 is divisible by 2 as the last digit is an even number

(vii) 3221 is not divisible by 2 as the last digit is not a multiple of 2
